(November 7, 2012) Today was Simple Machines Day for Carolina Day School’s first graders. The event is a culminating activity following the students’ science unit on simple machines.
The class has studied the six different simple machines during the past month, exploring in depth how simple machines were used long ago in Appalachian farming and how they make work much easier today. Students then apply their understanding and learning with a hands-on activity that allows them to work in groups to create complex machines made up of at least two or three simple machines. Parent volunteers helped students to build a mouse trap, puppy playground, and more, using the miscellaneous materials that students bring for the project.
